Clips from Letters From the Other Side and Where Soldiers Come From - Heather Courtney

Documentary filmmaker and guest judge Heather Courtney will be screening clips from her film Letters From the Other Side as well as her upcoming film Where Soldiers Come From this Thursday (4/15) at 5:00 PM in the Bijou Theater at the Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival. Courtney spent eight years working for various refugee and immigrant rights organizations in suburban Virginia, Washington, DC, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. She received her MFA in film production from The University of Texas at Austin.

Letters From the Other Side chronicles the daily struggle of four women left behind in post-NAFTA Mexico and includes video letters carried across the Mexican border by Courtney herself. Letters tells a side of the immigration story rarely seen in the media or national debates.

Where Soldiers Come From tells the story of two childhood friends and their journey from small-town teenagers, to soldiers in a war zone, to 22-year-old veterans. Enticed by college tuition, the friends sign up for the National Guard and continue living civilian lives until they are deployed to Afghanistan two years later. The film is scheduled to air on PBS after its October 2010 completion.

There will be a Q&A session with Heather following the screening. Free admission and open to the public!

Youth Knows No Pain - Mitch McCabe (88 mins)

Award-winning documentary filmmaker and guest judge Mitch McCabe will be screening her latest film, Youth Knows No Pain, Saturday (4/17) at 7:00 PM in room 105 Adler Journalism Building at the Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival. Told from the perspective of a plastic surgeon's daughter, the film chronicles the rise of the Anti-Aging Industry and the obsession with youth and beauty in today's society.

McCabe's films have won Student Academy Awards and screened at numerous festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Youth Knows No Pain was made with HBO Documentary Films.

There will be a Q&A session with McCabe following the screening. Free admission and open to the public!

IC Docs' opening night party is planned for 9:00pm at the Sanctuary Pub Thursday 4/15. Please join us to meet the judges, filmmakers and talk about the day's screenings!

The closing reception will be held at The Leaf Kitchen at 8:30pm immediately following Mitch McCabe's Judge's screening. Come for free snacks and enjoy Leaf's new selection of wine, sake and beer. Festival winners will be announced!

Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival

We are now accepting submissions for our 2010 Festival, to be held April 15-17.

We are looking to put together a diverse program that covers a broad range of forms, modes and styles, from conventional documentary to experimental non-fiction.
In short, anything that adds to the field or to the way we think about the form and practice of non-fiction filmmaking. All we ask is that the work be less than 30 minutes in length, as programming is tight and very rarely are we able to make space for longer work.

The regular deadline is February 5, 2010
The late deadline is March 6, 2010
These are post-mark deadlines.

About the Festival

Now in it’s eight year, The Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival (ICDOCS) is an annual festival committed to engaging our Iowa audience with the world at large through films that explore the boundaries of documentary and non-fiction filmmaking. The festival showcases independent, high-quality short (under 30 minutes) nonfiction film and video from around the world. ICDOCS was founded with the mission of serving as a catalyst for positive change and fostering dialogue on a range of contemporary issues, both local and international. We are a non-profit, all volunteer-run organization. Our Board programs approximately 10 hours of short works in competition for a ‘Best of the Festival’ award, and sponsors special out-of-competition screenings and events, including screenings by distinguished jurors.

This year’s festival is scheduled for April 15, 16, 17 - 2010

The festival awards cash prizes in the categories of Best of the Fest, Best International, Best Iowa and Best Student Film. Jurors watch all programs with the audience and determine the awards. The award winners will be notified at the final screening, a ‘Best of the Festival’ program. Jurors have included Academy Award nominee Sam Green, Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner Sarah Price, Guggenheim Fellows Rebecca Baron and Vanalyne Green, Slamdance Best Documentary-winner Jim Haverkamp, and the “father of public access,” George Stoney. Our festival features films and videos on a wide range of subjects and themes, including a love letter to Pamela Anderson, explorations of the U.S. war in Iraq, a portrait of a hunter in existential crisis, and a diary exploration of appearances of the Virgin Mary. Both experimental and traditional non-fiction work are encouraged.

How To Enter

Send DVD preview of your work along with a brief Film Description, completed Entry Form, Entry Fee, and any additional information you would like to include. If you are a student, please include a photocopy of a current School ID. Please be sure all Entry materials are CLEARLY LABELED with the Title, Running Time, Director, and Contact Information. Films in languages other than English must be subtitled or dubbed in English. Preview tapes will not be returned.

You must complete an Entry Form for each film entered. Entry forms are available for pdf download, or you can print from your browser. This may be found at www.icdocs.blogspot.com. You may also request an Entry Form through the USPS by sending a self addressed stamped envelope to:

Entry Fees

$25.00 for Regular Entries posted by February 5, 2010 ($5 for student entries), $35.00 for Entries received by March 6, 2009 ($10 students postmarked after February 5) We accept personal checks drawn on US banks, a cashier’s check or money order, and international checks or money orders (must have written upon it “In US Funds Only”). Please make checks payable to Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival. To pay by credit card, please use Paypal with ICDOCS@GMAIL.COM

International Entries shipped from outside the US can waive the Entry Fee.

If you are seeking a student discount, please include a photocopy of your current student ID along with your entry.

Selection & Notification

Festival board members meet throughout the winter to view all entries and decide which to program for the festival competition. Works selected to screen in the festival will be notified in March. If your film or video is accepted, a festival Screening Copy must be received by April 1, 2010. We also request Production Credits, Filmmaker Bio and a Still. Film (8mm, 16mm and 35mm) is preferred whenever possible. All film prints must be on projection reels, heads out. NO CORES. Each reel and film container must be clearly labeled. The DVD preview copy will be used as a backup screening copy.

Shipping

Entrants are responsible for the cost of shipping Preview Copies and Screening Copies to the festival. The festival cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of materials while in transit. ICDOCS will not accept entries mailed in fiber envelopes. Please use only plastic or bubble pack cases when shipping. ICDOCS will cover the cost of returning Screening Copies only to those programmed for festival competition.
